About This Site
Top Hawaiian Clothing is written from Hilo on the Big Island by a retired music teacher who dresses her husband, herself and the grandkids for every birthday luau, church Sunday and family photo. We buy the clothes, wear them for months, wash them at home, and write down what holds up and what does not. We cover men's aloha shirts, muumuu and aloha dresses, women's Hawaiian print tops, men's matching shirt and shorts sets, and keiki (kids') Hawaiian shirts.

Wearing Aloha Wear Safely
Keep loose, flowing clothing away from open flame. Long muumuu sleeves and kaftan hems catch easily on tiki torches, backyard fire pits, grills and the imu at a luau, and many lightweight printed fabrics burn or melt quickly. Tie back wide sleeves and stand well clear when you are near a fire.
A Hawaiian shirt is not sun protection. Unless a garment is specifically labeled with a UPF rating, assume the sun gets through thin fabric, and keep using sunscreen, shade and a hat on long days outdoors.
For keiki, check buttons before every wear and remove any that are loose, since small buttons are a choking hazard for toddlers. Choose sizes that do not drag on the ground, and never leave a young child to sleep in clothing with cords or ties.
Ankle-length dresses can be a trip hazard on stairs, wet lanai floors and uneven garden paths. Wash new clothing before the first wear to rinse out excess dye and finishing chemicals, and stop wearing anything that irritates your skin.
